Washington Redskins hire Jim Zorn.
( doesn't he look like the middle brady bunch boy in that pic) --------->
.
.
The 54 year old quarterbacks coach gets inked to a 5 year 15 million dollar deal. I would argue that the chances of him finishing that deal are slim to none. This will be Dan Snyder's 6th head coach in 10 years! SIX coaches in 10 years, do the math on his life expectancy! You want your head coach to be a staple and be there for years. Assuming your team didn't win the Super Bowl, you want your team to build on what it did the previous year. It is very difficult to do that when you change coaches every other year. In fact, the Redskins are up to their 92nd coach under FAN Snyder.
.
.
I don't like how people call Zorn a "young" coach. He physically looks young and he wasn't even an offensive coordinator but the guy is still 54. He isn't old, but when you have coaches in their early to mid thirties you can't call the 54 year old guy "young". It is a relative concept. The 60 year old coaches are considered " old" so 54 can't be "young".
.
.
It reminds me of the concept of Joey Porter vs Adalis Thomas.
.
Joey Porter and Adalis Thomas are the same age, but people consider Joey Porter " old" where as nobody mentions Thomas' age. If anything people say that Thomas is " in his prime". The reason why this happens is because Joey Porter has had a house hold name for years. People remember him sacking quarterbacks in the Steelers uniform and kicking dirt for years. People " learned" about Adalias Thomas last year before he became a free agent. People started hearing that he could play all 11 positions on defense and how this guy Adalias was a special player for the Ravens. People confuse " when they heard about him" with " how long he existed". Joey Porter has been "around " longer in football chat and is therefore "older" to casual fans.
.
Zorn has the same thing. People don't know about him, so he must be "new". Throw in the fact that he has a baby face and they call him " young".
.
First mistake
.
- In his press conference Zorn said that he wanted to win games for the "Marron, yellow and black". Now correct me if I am wrong, but I thought everybody knew the Redskins were Burgundy and Gold". I guess everybody didn't know that, including the coach of the team. How do you mess that up?
.
It cracks me up that Dan Snyder gave a rare interview and said he spoke with 10 guys, and that Zorn was their 1st choice and the only guy that was given an offer. Really? Is that why you hired him on as an offensive coordinator first? That makes no sense. He was only hired a few days AFTER Steve Spagnolou was interviewed for 10 hours and then brought in the following day.
.
What they should have done.
.
- The logical thing would have been to promote Greg Williams from within. Really, Al Saunders OR Greg Williams could have taken over for a team that made the playoffs and kept things relatively in tact. I think Williams is a little bit of a hot head and the defense is the strength of the team and that HE should have been promoted to HC.
.
- If you promote Williams, you have a decent chance of keeping Al Saunders
- If you promote Al Saunders, I think Williams is hot headed enough to leave.
.
I would have only gone to a 3rd candidate if you are damn sure that guy ( say Bill Cower) is a better alternative to what you had. Both coordinators are decent and had a decent chance to build on what they had already created in Washington. Marcus Washington and the defense in particular liked their defensive coordinator, and now he is gone.
.
Coaching changes are KILLER to the teams. It involved new schemes, new ideas, and often new players. It isn't always a BAD thing to rip up a team, but it generally isn't a good idea to rip up a PLAYOFF team.
.
.
Good Luck Jim Zorn, you are going to need it.
