NFL Combine

Last year I watched the combine while everybody on earth was watching the Olympics. I'd much rather watch the NFL future stars run, jump, and throw, instead of watching the worlds athletes run, jump, and swim.... or ice skate.

Stock rising:
- One name that jumps out at me is Arizona running back Chris Henry. The guy has a chiseled 230 pound body and ran a 4.33 40 yard dash. He might not catapult into the first round, but his physical size and speed can't be ignored. The NFL network did a good job saying that scouts will now bust out those Arizona tapes and do a double take and see if Chris Henry PLAYED at a 4.33 speed.
- Calvin Johnson solidified his top notch draft stock. The guy had no reason to work out, but his competitive juices started flowing when he saw his peers run. He grabbed an East Carolina Quarterbacks spikes and ran a sub 4.4 40 yard dash. He had nothing to gain, but everything to lose by running the 40, but he solidified his stock. I also liked the story how in a similar situation at his Georgia Tech pro day he worked out just so that scouts would come out and watch his TEAMMATES and give them some exposure to the scouts. Very unselfish act.
- Robert Meachem the wide receiver out of Tennessee also ran a fast 40, and did well in the "gauntlet" catching drill. You can always see receivers cheating by weaving down the line as opposed to running straight. Meachem looked very polished in the drill and when you combine that with his speed he might be a last 1st round pick now. I liked him in college at Tennessee and I can remember a game earlier in the year that he just took over.
- Drew Staunton from Michigan State has also got some press during some of the quarterback drills. He has thrown some good balls and you can't ignore the guys physical presence. He didn't have the best team at Michigan State but he played well last year. People think that as possibly the 3rd best quarterback, that Staunton could raise his stock in the way Jay Cutler did last year with good work outs.

Stock falling:
Teams are trying to get a good read on Troy Smith. I just see the guy in the drills with such focus and he's trying to do a good job. The thing that I wanted to point out is there was a camera shot where they showed Troy Smith standing next to Jemarcus Russell and Russell towering over him. Russell is about a half foot taller than Smith and he looked every bit of it. It was a terrible image for Smith as the TV shot had the two guys standing next to each other and Troy Smith looked like Jemarcus Russells little brother. If I were Troy Smiths agent I would be angry because that picture might cost Troy Smith millions of dollars.

- There was a running back from I believe Minnesota who's name escapes me right now. The kid got kicked out of school and showed up at the combine 15 pounds overweight and ran a 4.8 40. It almost reminds you of Maurice Clarett and we all remember how that story panned out. I'd be shocked if this guy gets drafted.

- I think Marshawn Lynch could have helped himself with a little bit faster 40 yard dash. We all know that he PLAYS with such speed but he didn't run the fastest 40. Dick Vermiel and Marshall Faulk were quick to point out that he seemed to wobble in his first 10-20 yards of the 40 which would tend to slow him down. The bright side of that is that he seemed to run with great balance, and ran like a football player as opposed to a track sprinter.

Take a closer look at:
Sydney Rice the Receiver from South Carolina. He might not have run the fastest 40 and he was only a sophomore but the guy had maturity and production from the position of receiver. He could be a 1st round pick and if he falls he could be a good receiver to pick up.

Deshawn Wynn the running back from Florida. He ran a 4.45 40 yard dash at 230 pounds. You have to like his size and the way he's put together. I still believe the league will like those bigger backs. You also have to remember that everybody is running these times on a flat surface with no pads. You would think a 230 pound guy in pads would tend to keep more of that speed, where these lighter receivers might be a little more slowed down in pads. You have to take notice of a guy like Wynn with that size and speed and who won a national championship

Best player:
If you have a worthy quarterback, they could be the best player in the draft but I'm not sure we have that. I'm not a big Jemarcus Russell fan, and I actually felt better about Brady Quinn last year. Adrian Peterson has to remind you of a Larry Johnson and he says he reminds himself of a Larry Johnson/LT. I'd tend to agree with Peterson in that he has the size of LJ, maybe a little less power, but probably more lateral movement. The best player overall or maybe the safest bet seems to be Calvin Johnson. The guy is 6'5, 239 pounds and an absolute burner and great guy. He has the size of a Plaxico Burress, but also runs with such grace. He sort of reminds you of Terrell Owens without the attitude.

I love hearing these player stories.
- The New York Giants apparently have a 480 wonderlac/personality test. In the past they asked Kevin Hardy what was the most bizarre question on the test. Hardy said that there was a question that asked, " do you like tall women?". Hardy said that he responded by crossing out the "t" so that it read, " I like ALL women".

- Dick Vermiel was talking about how the agents prep these players in these 15 minute interviews. Guys are taught to be honest about their past because teams now employ extensive background checks. He said that one player was being overly honest after his interview and came back into the room and told them, "Wait a minute, there is else something I have to tell you , I was kicked out of school for running into an old folks home. I went to a party and drank too much and crashed into an old folks home. Vermiel said that the player is still in the league playing today.

I love the meat head strength coach. When Brian Leonard from Rutgers came to do his bench press he said, " come on Soprano".

I really like listening to wisdown of Marshall Faulk and Dick Vermiel and the NFL draft analyst brings up very good points. They form a good team and I enjoy listening to them.

Michael Irvin fired

Now I quit watching those pre-game shows a long time ago. All they do is spew worthless propaganda into the publics mind. Watching NFL Sunday countdown or any of the other shows a couple hours before kick off is about the worst thing a gambler can do. The only semi good information they provide is last minute injury updates, but I really don't care if Terry Bradshaw thinks Byron Leftwhich will be a good quarterback or not or if Jimmy Johnson thinks the Eagles are done.

Those analysts on the shows all have different roles. When they throw on a former coach, he might explain certain aspects of the game, comment on off-field controversy, and award credit to outstanding players. Jim Mora Jr. was on one of those shows and he was just praising everybody. Now surly you don't want to turn on your TV and listen to how both teams are outstanding and how the analyst just couldn't make a prediction, " I'd just hate to have to pick who I think will win this game". Why the hell would an analyst NOT want to make a prediction? Isn't that their job? Nobody wants to make a bold prediction, because people don't want to be wrong. Nobody wants them to roll that footage weeks later so everybody makes these " safe" picks. Scared money makes no money.

Michael Irvin was a character on his pre-game show. He wouldn't say these political correct answers but he would speak his mind, Cocaine induced and all. I like what he brought to the table, " the players perspective ".

Do you remember two years ago when Deuce Staley would have 22 carries for 94 yards ( 0 touchdowns) while Jerome Bettis would have 5 rushes for 4 yards and 2 touchdowns? Michael Irvin was asked how that would make him "feel" if he were Deuce Staley. Instead of giving some boring answer about " just winning" or being a good teammate, Irvin said that lack of goal line carries would piss him off. He talked about how Staley was being the work horse and then Bettis gets to get all the glory with those goal line carries. I want to hear that. I want to hear what people are really thinking. Shannon Sharpe says some pretty stupid things at times, but he also offers the players perspective ( as stupid as it may be).

People hate Irvin. They hate him because he was a Cowboy, they hate him because he's cocky, they hate him because he kept getting caught with coke, and they hate him because he's an asshole with an opinion. The last reason is why I like him. When Jim Mora Jr. is praising everybody who is playing the game, he is really praising nobody as well. Most of those people on those pre-game shows really aren't saying anything... but Irvin was.

The funniest Irvin moment was when Irvin was debating with Sean Salisbury ( a guy known to say even dumber things). Irvin was telling SS how some team was going to win. SS countered telling Irvin that the other team was going to win. They argued like a bunch of 4th graders until Irvin made some ridiculous comment. Salisbury countered with " what are you... on crack or something"?

Irvin also had this obsession with " #1 receivers". He loved to talk T.O and Me-shawn Johnson. He would also many times be the one leading the conversations. You could Irvin speaking his mind, while the other guys would sit there in a shell and not really say much. They would then ASK coach Ditaka what he was thinking ( to say something). Irvin would say what he would want, while those coaches would have to think of these politically correct responses.

None of those shows are worth watching anyway. The only guy I would really listen to is Steve Young.

Current Events/ First action of 07

First Action of 07

Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl 42, 12.5 units to win 450 ( 35/1 odds)
New England Patriots to win Super Bowl 41, 2.5 units to win 32.5 ( 12/1 odds)

I like to jump on NEXT years odds after THIS year ends. I can't believe the odds I got. Most of the Sports books offer the Eagles at 12/1 to 15/1 but I found them at 35/1. That means they are pretty much 3 times cheaper at the place I found them at which is ridiculous. I think the Eagles have as good a shot as anybody in the NFC and I'll tell you right now that 35/1 is off the mark. The very day AFTER I made my wager the odds dropped to 30/1. If anybody is interested in this opportunity send me an Email at FootballChrisL@gmail.com and I will direct you to the book I found it at.

I think the New England Patriots are a clear favorite to win the trophy NEXT year but a lot of people feel that way. I seemed to find them at 6/1 to 8/1 but I found them at my same book at 12/1 which is a good deal. Who ever said anything about an efficient market hypothesis?

I want to write up in depth about why I like those odds, but I'd rather talk about some current events now. I'm listen to quite a bit of talk radio and various sports media and I'm still sick about the smack people talked about Darrent Williams the late Broncos corner back.

Darrent Williams

Some were saying that " nothing good happens out late at night". I understand their point and I would usually agree with them. But this was NEW YEARS EVE! Darrent was shot in the neck and killed while he was inside a limo at 2AM. He was LEAVING the club at 2AM in the morning which seems pretty standard to me. I would love to ask those critics where THEY were at 2AM on New Years! I can't believe the level of insensitivity people have for a young man with a bright future. His Punter was crying at the team facilities the next day. He was saying that Darrent treated him so well, like one of the guys, as opposed to treating him like some dorky punter that wasn't part of the team. I respect that, I respect that a lot.

One of my favorite Darrent Williams moments was one of my favorite moments of the season. When Denver played Indianapolis earlier in the year, Peyton Manning was staying away from Champ Bailey and throwing at Darrent Williams on the left side of the Denver defense. Manning kept going to Reggie Wayne and they had a very good game against Darrent. That was the same Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne who were lighting up the whole NFL so nothing against Darrent. A few weeks later the team who played Denver ( who it was escapes me) obviously watched film and tried to attack Darrent Williams on the left side as Peyton Manning had. We'll Darrent was ready for it and he played a good game and picked off the opposing quarterback. He was so happy and pumped and he kept saying " stop picking on ME!". I don't remember who Denver was playing but Phill Simms was doing the game and I just remember that moment as such triumph. We had just seen a player down in the dumps, but then he made a spectacular play and was feeling such joy. It was a great moment, they tried to bully him but he stood up to them and met the challenge.

Wade Phillips
He takes over in Buffalo for a 6-10 Marv Levy team. They go 29-19 and make the playoffs 2 out of 3 years under Wade Phillips and then he gets fired. After that Greg Williams takes over and the team goes 3-13 yet everybody thinks Phillips is some bum? The guy had success coaching defense in Atlanta and San Diego as well. Now I am NOT going to give Phillips any props for going 16-16 in Denver with John Elway, but his most recent coaching job in Buffalo was pretty good if you ask me. How he helped transform that 3-4 defense in San Diego was pretty good if you ask me. Jerry Jones wants Demarcus Ware to be used as Shawn Merriman was in San Diego and Phillips was the puppet man pulling the strings at defensive coordinator.

I think a lot of the criticism just has to deal with this idea popularized by the media that we need " new coaches to be given a chance". The media will demonize and slander these " used", " recycled" coaches and say that they are a part of " an old boy network". They make it seem like Wade Phillips is a worthless piece of trash that shouldn't be near the headset.

I believe a lot of this " old boy network" talk came about when the Rooney rule took effect. The media loves the idea of a " new guy getting a chance" pretty much regardless of skin color. Even if the guy is a young and inexperienced white guy like Lane Kiffen in Oakland. I think that this " hire the young inexperienced guy" is a DANGEROUS fad. I'm a free market kind of guy that says " just hire the best candidate that is available for the job" whether he is black, white, red, green, from mars, Jupiter, Pluto etc. I was checking out some NFL forums and people were saying that they wanted "coach X" to get a job because he " deserved it". I'm not for entitlements, I am for hiring the best damn coach available.

Martyball fired.

I guess going 14-2 wasn't good enough. I guess only 2 losing seasons in 21 years isn't good enough ( and one of them was 7-9). Oh yeah, Martyball can't win in the playoffs. I thought Bill Cower and Tony Dungy were the same way too. The whole thing is just so childish to me, I mean, two grown professionals fight so much that the owner had to FIRE one of the best coaches out there.

Was it really Martys fault that his corner picked the ball off on 4th down and was then stripped by a Patriots corner playing receiver ( Troy Brown)? Was it his fault that his defender lost his mind and had a crucial 15 yard penalty to keep the Pats drive alive? Was Marty such a bad coach because John Elway drove his team down the field in one of the most magical drives in NFL history? How about that Earnest Byner fumble? What about the playoff game that his kicker missed 3 field goals and his team lost by 3? Mary put his teams in position to win, but they didn't. He MADE HIS OPPONENT BEAT HIM. Now if Marty had these leads and kept playing aggressive and lost, people would still be bashing him but for other reasons. You can't win them all guys!

Marty won the most regular season games in 06/07 and he has been the winningest coach in 3 other seasons with 3 separate teams! It's not like Marty is sitting on some dynasty, he got the best results from THREE separate franchises.

I sort of feel sorry for the guy, he gets kicked to the curb AFTER all the other jobs have already been filled.

Superbowl 41 Final Thought

This Super Bowl just didn't do it for me. The whole world was watching, the game was in Miami, and I won a fair chunk of change but the game just didn't do it for me. The Rain ruined the game for me, and the ball control offense the Colts ran ruined it for me. How long did the Bears have the ball? The Bears were doubled in yardage and many of their yards came on that long Thomas Jones run. If you took away the Jones run and the Hester return, the Bears did nothing on offense. Their defense got run over and they gave up a lot of short passes as well.

I saw some analysis on how the Bears were keeping their safeties extra deep to take away the deep ball for Indy, but the rain is a natural 12th man to help that. Manning just took what the defense gave him and ate up the Bears with a run game and dink and dunk throws underneath. Especially with the wet balls and playing surface, I am sure that Manning didn't mind working on his short game.

Manning 100% deserves the MVP. The people that are complaining that the RB's deserve the MVP really don't understand football. The same people bitching that Addai or Rhodes should have won MVP are the same people that said the Colts were going to be screwed when Edge James left as a free agent. Those same people were saying that Peyton would be "screwed when Edge took his 2,000 yards of total offense with him". Don't people understand that Dominic Rhodes is an average back in a very, VERY good system? Not only do those Colts run the stretch run play well, but Peyton calls it to the correct side, and in correct situations. When opposing safeties are not only out of the box, but they are 18 yards off the ball, it gives the running back a MUCH more favorable situation. People say that a good running back is the Quarterbacks best friend, but in this situation MANNING is his running backs best friend.

Edge left Indy with his 2,000 yards of total offense, but how well did he play in Arizona? The point of the matter is that Manning truly makes the players around him better. He is the "point guard" of that Indy offense that carefully reads the defense and puts his skilled position players in a position to win. Now there is no doubt in my mind that if the Bears had blitzed Manning to death that Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison would have put up the big numbers. Manning is like an Iguana that just adapts to what the defense gives him.

Not only was Manning like an Iguana that adapts to what teams give him, he was like a damn Snake that sucked the life out of the Bears. If Manning's offense is so efficient that it marches down the field and keeps the defense on the field, it keeps his Colts Defense and special teams off the field. It seemed like the Colts had the ball the whole game as Mannings offense was just sucking the life out of the Bears.

The Colts special teams were horrible. They were the first team to ever give up a kick return touchdown on the opening play of the Super Bowl. After that they mixed in squib kicks but it seemed like the Bears were starting from the 35, 40 or even 50 yard line on every possession. That is NOT good for your teams field position. The Colts were not a very well rounded team. They had horrible special teams, a bad defense, but a very good offense. You don't historically see teams as unbalanced as the Colts winning the big one.

Coach Manning really is a special guy that takes care of everything. I was reading the Peter King article that pointed out that Peyton Manning made sure he had 54 balls broken in that he felt comfortable with. The new balls have a certain coat of wax on them that makes them slippery and harder to throw or catch. Manning had the ball boys bring him the balls after practice one day to make sure they were ok. Manning vetoed about half of the balls and he had a crew of people helping break the balls in until he accepted every last one of them. Now how many other players do you think check all the potential game balls before each game? Do you think Mike Vick is instructing his ball boys to break the balls in or do you think he just shows up and tries to " make plays"?

Peyton's preparation is outstanding. If you took Manning off the Colts they are about a 4-12 team, but with him they win the Super Bowl. Not only did the Colts win the Super Bowl, but they were playing a ball control offense that kept their shoddy defense and special teams off the field.

I'm not some huge Peyton fan, but I am glad he won his ring so that now he doesn't have that negative media breathing down his throat after every loss. Manning is one of the best quarterbacks ever but we always have to listen to how he isn't " clutch. Now my question is if New England beats the Colts next year in the playoffs, will those poop head writers still call Manning a choke artist?

Last year we saw Bill Cower finally get his ring. This year we saw Peyton earn his ring ( and Tony Dungy was along for the ride), could we see Donovan or Martyball earn the ring next year, or will somebody like Tom Brady just add to his collection?

Comments and questions are always welcome to FootballChrisL@Gmail.com I plan on doing a "current events" segment this off-season on news and notes, Football 101 chalk talk, as well as NFL futures wagers.

SB 41 Final thoughts

Action
Colts to win Future( 12.5 units to win 18.75)
Colts -7 ( 2.5 units to win 2.5 units)

Once again, I am sick and tired of people and their cop out. Everybody is picking the Colts to win, but they think the Bears will cover. Teams that win games, cover the spread. This cop out is telling me that people want to play both sides of the fence. If the Colts win, everybody will tell their buddies at the water cooler on Monday that they were correct in picking the Colts. If the Bears win, everybody will go to the water cooler on Monday and say that they thought the Bears would cover.

I understand that everybody can IMAGINE the Bears winning. It really wouldn't be THAT big of an upset, but it's not going to happen. The Colts will win!

The Colts will win, Manning should win MVP, and the great quarterback debates will only begin. Right after the game the " Manning as the best ever" talks will begin with the talking heads and their post game chatter. Manning will finally and rightfully have his name inserted into " greatest QB of all-time" conversation. The Manning haters will congratulate Manning on that ring first ring, but they will say that he still needs 3 more to catapult Brady, Montana and Elway. So if Manning wins, " congrats, you were supposed to win ( as if it's easy to win a world championship or something)", but if Manning loses, he will once again carry the label of the great choke artist.

I would bet on Manning winning the MVP, or some of the Colts alternative point spreads ( winning by more than 7) but the odds at Bodog are horrible. If you bet on the colts to win by more than 14.5 points you barley double your wager.

An interesting angle is the fact that if Indy gets up early, Grossman will have the ball in his hands playing catch-up ball. That is disastrous for the Bears because they won't be able to attack that weak Colts rush defense. We have had some pretty close Super Bowls in the past, but this one could potentially get out of hand.

Think about how prepared Manning will be, and REMEMBER that Rex Grossman admitted publicly to not being prepared for the season finale against Green Bay. Now who do you think wins this game, arguably the best QB ever who is a true student of the game, or a marginal quarterback who admits to not being prepared from time to time? Now I understand that the quarterback is only 1 chess piece of a football team, but he is also the most important chess piece of a football team.

Enjoy the game.

Super Bowl 41

So the big game is finally here. The Super Bowl. Super bowl squares and the masses are drawn into the big game. Everybody has an opinion on the big game even non-football fans. Everybody has their own amateur forecast too, " If the colts can pass, they will win". " If the Bears can run the ball and play D, they will win".

Everybody has these "If, then" statements carefully planned out so when their predicted team losses, they can always say " well, the IF part never happened".

Now most people have lived long enough to witness quite a few upsets in their life. If the Bears go ahead and upset the Colts, it would not even be close to one of the greatest upsets of all-time. It wouldn't even be the greatest upset in the past 10 years ( the New England Patriots were 14 point underdogs against the rams a few years back).

Now I understand that most people can imagine a scenario where the Bears will win the big game, but it's just not going to happen. Stop picturing a boring, ugly, defensive game were the Bears eek out a win. The Colts won the Super Bowl last week when they beat the Patriots.

The Colts didn't come this far to lose the big game. The two week layoff gives Brainiac Peyton Manning an extra week to prepare. The Bears defense is NOT the same without Tommy Harris wreaking havoc in the middle and they won't be on a frozen grass field in 2 degree weather to help slow down the opposing offense. The Bears run a similar cover 2 defense that Peyton Manning sees everyday in practice ( now I understand that Bears run it BETTER), but that familiarity benefits Peyton. It's not like the Bears D, gets to see Rex Grossman dissect them and tear them to shreds every day in practice.

Now I am not going to break this game down, because it has already been broken down a million ways. So don't out think yourself, The Colts will win and cover the spread. I know it's sexy to pick the upset but it's not going to happen this year.

I always get asked about the Total as well. The Over/Under is pegged at 48 and despite the grass field, I think the game goes OVER.

My plays
I have futures on the Colts to win it all. 12.5 units to win 18.75
